“The universe buries strange jewels deep within us all and then stands back to see if we can ever find them.”

This quote is from one of my favourite books, “Big Magic” by Elizabeth Gilbert.

The book is Gilbert’s reflections on living a creative life and it is both inspiring and beautifully written. (I recommend listening to the audio book. There’s nothing better than being lulled to sleep by Liz Gilbert reading to you. But I digress…)

This line, in particular, always gives me pause.

In this world that keeps us so busy, are we even bothering to look for the jewels that are inside us?

For me, some days the answer is yes but too many days the answer is a firm no. No, I am often not taking the time to explore what’s inside me because I’ve made myself too busy.

I’m busy being a parent and a business owner and a friend and a sister and a leader…

Who’s got time to mine the treasures that are hidden inside when you’re just trying to do all the things you said you’d do today?

But the reality is that you and I both must make the time.

Because when we grab our pick axe and shovel and start digging, it means we believe there is something within us that’s worth finding. We get excited about life’s possibilities again.

The negative voices in your head will tell you this is nonsense. You have a full schedule and don’t have time for such shenanigans. But there’s a quieter, wiser voice inside you too, telling you that there’s something inside you aching to come out and wouldn’t you like to find out what it is?

So what do you say? Will you join me in a treasure hunt? Who knows what shiny gems you’ll uncover!!
