Have you ever done something to please others even though it didn’t make you happy?
No matter why you make this choice, it’s a recipe for disappointment and probably resentment.
It’s wonderful to help others get what they want; just not by sacrificing what’s right for you. Better to learn what you truly desire and follow that path.
“How do I do that?” you might ask, if, like me, you weren’t one of those lucky people who seemed to have a naturally strong idea about their purpose in life.
Well into my 30s, I didn’t have a concrete vision for what I wanted to do with my life, so I ended up going along with other people’s ideas of what life should generally look like…
…which is why I ended up a divorced single parent on the verge of burnout at age 38.
And then I met my first coach. And she introduced me to personal values. It was like a light bulb went off. Admittedly, it was a dim lightbulb at first. I didn’t really grasp the impact knowing my values would have on my life.
But taking the time to identify what’s most important to me gave me a personal guidance system that makes all my choices so much easier. I rarely worry whether I’m making the right choice anymore because I measure everything against my values.
I now have greater confidence in my own ability to choose. I can say no to opportunties that don’t feel good with a ready explanation as to why. FOMO is almost non-existent for me. I am following my own path and feeling more fulfilled than I ever thought possible.
